Our next meeting will be Wednesday, December 1 at Royale Orleans, 2801 Telegraph Road. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; dinner served about 6:15, and the program at about 7:30 p.m. Because of the holiday we will not be meeting in November.

The speaker is Shawn Williams, whose program is “THE CITY CLASS IRONCLADS: The Brown Water Navy That Saved the Union.”

Shawn will discuss the seven ironclads built by James B. Eads, the specifications of the ships, and what life was like for the sailors on them. The program will cover the campaigns the ships participated in, and how they were important to the Union for gaining control of the rivers during the war. Included in his talk will be a virtual tour of the USS CAIRO, which is located at the Vicksburg National Military Park.

Shawn Williams, a native of Kentucky, is on staff with the US GRANT NHS and has worked with the park service for nearly eighteen years.  He has two master’s degrees, one being a degree in Civil War history.
