When Robert Todd Lincoln graduated from Harvard in 1864 he was determined to join the Union ranks and “see something of the war for himself.”  Though he ended up spending less than two months in a Union uniform, he witnessed some of the war’s most iconic scenes, including the fall of Richmond, the surrender at Appomattox, and the horrific aftermath of the assassination.  His father’s murder marked the beginning of a series of “civil wars” that continued throughout the rest of Robert’s life and ensured his legacy was the most misunderstood member of the Lincoln family.

Speaker’s Biography:  

Dr. Samuel Wheeler is a historian specializing in the history of Illinois, the Civil War Era, and the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln.  He earned his Ph.D. in history from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and has worked in the field of Public History for more than two decades.  Dr. Wheeler has served as the State Historian of Illinois and Director of Research and Collections at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, where he oversaw historical content development, Illinois history initiatives, and was responsible for the state’s most precious historical documents and artifacts.  In 2020 Lincoln College in Illinois awarded Dr. Wheeler with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for his work promoting the state’s history and the Lincoln legacy.  Dr. Wheeler currently serves as the Director of History Programs at the Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission in Springfield.

This month’s meeting will be at Affton Elks Lodge, 6330 Heege Rd., St. Louis, MO 63123 on Feburary 23. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
