Bertram Hayes-Davis, Great Grandson of Confederate President Jefferson Davis
Bertram Hayes-Davis, a great-great grandson of Jefferson Davis, is deeply committed to educating the public about the life and legacy of his distinguished ancestor. Bertram has served since 1976 as the President of the Davis Family Association and since 1988 as the President of the Papers of Jefferson Davis. He is the former Executive Director of Beauvoir, the last home of Jefferson Davis and the Presidential Library in Biloxi Mississippi. Over the last 40 years, Bertram has traveled and spoken at a majority of Davis sights throughout the country. He has been interviewed by Life, People, USA Today online, New York Times, CNN, MSNBC and Newsweek. He was part of The History Channel’s Civil War Documentary, “Blood and Glory: The Civil War in Color” and has had numerous online interviews, including CBS Sunday Morning. He has recently written a series of Op Ed articles that have been published in Mississippi, Texas, Kentucky and Virginia. He is directly quoted nationally about his great-great grandfather and the many issues confronting our country today.
He is engaged in the efforts to preserve the history of Jefferson Davis as an American Statesman and an important historic figure. Bertram has traveled and toured numerous Civil War Battlefields, historical venues and Davis sites throughout our country. His perspective is unique, in reference to his ancestor and the events surrounding the conflict. As a story teller, he lectures and relates oral history on the Civil War, American History and Jefferson Davis. These include speaking on River and Waterway Cruises, as well as various land tours.
He and his wife Carol own Vicksburg Old Town Tours. They provide historical experiences for groups through the historic district of Vicksburg. They include intimate conversations with the residents and owners of the residences on the tour.
Bertram has a Master’s of Science in Geology and spent sixteen years in the Oil and Gas Exploration business in Dallas Texas. Four of those years were spent traveling in Russia. Bertram has held numerous positions in the non-profit sector in Colorado Springs. Bertram also held a position in the financial industry for J.P. Morgan Private Bank as Vice President, Head of Oil and Gas Management in Dallas Texas. He and Carol currently live in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
