The Civil War Career of James Burklow, Private in Battery K of the First Illinois Volunteer Light Artillery
by Lance Geiger
On September 22, Lance Geiger returns to give a program entitled “The Civil War Career of James Burklow, Private in Battery K of the First Illinois Volunteer Light Artillery.”
Burklow’s unit was equipped with the quirky little two-pounder Woodruff cannon. He saw a good deal of action during the war and was a participant in the spectacular raid through Mississippi led by Benjamin Grierson in 1863. (I don’t know who played Burklow in the John Wayne movie.)
Lance Geiger is “The History Guy” on YouTube, where he tells forgotten stories of ancient and modern events “that deserve to be remembered.” A resident of the Metro East, Lance often relates lesser-known history from the St. Louis and Southern Illinois area, as well as events from around the world. His award-winning channel has garnered more than 144 million views and 980,000 subscribers.
